Originally built during the reign of Augustus and rebuilt by Hadrian in the early 2nd century AD, the Pantheon is a former Roman temple whose name comes from the Greek word Pantheion, which refers generally to the full set of Greek gods. The building was given in 609 to Pope Boniface IV when it became named for St. Mary and the Martyrs; it is now a basilica.
Paris’ Panthéon, built in the 18th century, was named after and inspired by the Roman building; however, Paris’ is a mausoleum.
