Week #5 of Season 42 begins today with TJ Fisher going for victory #3 against Brian Dixon and Kate Kostelnik.

In case anyone was wondering, I decided that I would rather publish editorial thoughts this morning in my preview instead of separately on the weekend. What would have been the separate editorial is now in the paragraphs below.

Firstly, I’d like to thank TV Insider and The Sun for their citations of Friday’s unique-to-regular-play triple-zero-bet-in-Final situation. It does give me enjoyment to be able to report on these sorts of unique happenstances, and I’m more than happy to do so when my reporting is cited properly when it ends up elsewhere.

There have been times during his run when TJ has seemed to be one of the best players in Jeopardy! history when it comes to timing on the signalling device; if this keeps up, I would say his comments last week about being “a coward” when it comes to Daily Double betting is probably a good thing. Being able to find the Daily Doubles just to keep them out of your opponents’ hands (even if you’re only picking up a few thousand from them yourself) is a very valid victory strategy, especially if those opponents are starved of opportunity to get in themselves by ringing in.

For those fans who might have been hoping that an expanded postseason field is happening, I don’t have particularly great news to report this morning: On Camera Audiences only shows tape days on November 18 & 19, following November 4–6 (what is currently presumed to be the three weeks of Second Chance). Unfortunately, the fact that Champions Wildcard appears to be taping over just two weeks is currently a grave disappointment, and it once again brings up one very glaring issue: Looking back at the game from September 26, had Prasad Patil chosen to punt Final Jeopardy instead of answering it correctly, Prasad would have been just about guaranteed a Second Chance return, and Vickie Talvola very like would be at least in a Champions Wildcard position. This incentivizes behavior that should never happen on a game show, where it would have been better for Prasad’s postseason chances to lose instead of win. I believe this is an unforgivable flaw in the entire postseason format as it stands right now. Either Champions Wildcard needs to be significantly expanded or Second Chance needs to be excised in the interest of fairness, but this half-measure is not an acceptable solution.

Due to the fact that Season 1 of The Pitt taped over a series of months, but was set over a 15-hour period in a Pittsburgh emergency room, continuity was incredibly important, as star Noah Wyle detailed in publicity interviews earlier this year. In order to preserve the “this entire season is set over a single day” continuity, the cast had to look exactly the same at the end of shooting as they did the start. The series has been one of the streaming hits of 2025, though, with a second “day” coming in January.

One thing I do like from the writers here is to specify that this clue is going to be about current television, so that players can calibrate their betting accordingly. That being said: current television, with the increased fracturing in the television landscape, is probably going to turn into a “punt” category for a lot of players, much like sports often turns into the same. I am very interested in seeing what happens with the betting in today’s game.
