Babylonian king Hammurabi, who reigned from 1792 to 1750 B.C., is most famous today for his code of laws, which was claimed to have been received by Hammurabi from Shamash, the Babylonian god of justice. It is also a famous example of a legal doctrine called “lex talionis” (better known as “an eye for an eye”). The code detailed 282 different laws and edicts, including one that put tavern-keepers to death if they short-changed customers on beer.
The stele which contained the code had been part of war spoils in the 12th century B.C. and recovered in 1901 as part of an archaeological dig of Susa, the Elamite capital located in modern-day Iran (its location is known today as Shush, a city of just over 50,000 people).
