Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Notable Women) for Monday, October 25, 2021 (Season 38, Game 31):
Of the 3 pioneering women in their field to be dubbed the “Trimates”, this one got her Ph.D from Cambridge in 1966
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Hilary Bouxsein, a visiting assistant professor from Northfield, Minnesota
Stephen Son, a business operations professional from Los Angeles, California
Jonathan Fisher, an actor originally from Coral Gables, Florida (10-day total: $230,100)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Jonathan, after defeating Matt Amodio, has now gone on himself to win 10 games. How much further will Jonathan go? Jonathan’s just $34,902 from reaching Seth Wilson’s 12-game total; a big win will surpass that mark today!
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to. When wearing a mask, ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: Who is Jane Goodall?
More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2021 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
The Trimates were a group of three women—Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birutė Galdikas—who were chosen by Louis Leakey to study many of the great apes in their natural environments. Goodall studied chimpanzees, Fossey gorillas, and Galdikas orangutans. Goodall was over a decade into her career studying chimpanzees before she received her Ph.D at Cambridge and was a very rare case of being allowed to study for a Ph.D at Cambridge before having obtained a BA or BSc.
Note that I severely dislike this clue: both Goodall and Fossey both did studies at Cambridge. Having this clue come down to when specifically Goodall and Fossey were awarded their Ph.D—especially when Fossey’s studies in Africa began in 1967—is incredibly misleading pinning at best. It’s very disappointing to see that these very poor, tenuous, clues haven’t stopped with the departure of Mike Richards. The show’s writing has really gone downhill since Harry Friedman left.

Today’s interviews:
Hilary teaches classical studies (Greek & Latin language and culture).
Stephen was a light sleeper as a kid and is now a heavy sleeper.
Jonathan is looking to support his girlfriend’s adaptation of “The Winter’s Tale”.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- This was the first game since July 6 where the contestants went 0-for-3 on the Daily Doubles.
- Even though all three players got today’s Final, I don’t think that this makes the clue any less problematic, in my opinion.
