In Greek mythology, the nine muses—Calliope (epic poetry), Clio (history), Erato (love poetry), Euterpe (music), Melpomene (tragedy), Polyhymnia (sacred poetry), Terpsichore (dance), Thalia (comedy), and Urania (astronomy)—were Greek goddesses who were seen as inspirations in each of those subjects. They also provide inspiration for the words “muse” (a general term for an artist or writer’s inspiration) and “museum” (a term for a place housing a public display of knowledge). The first “Museum” was seen as the Musaeum in Alexandria, Egypt, of which the Library of Alexandria was the most famous part.
