Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: 2-day champion Finn Corrigan returns to defend his title after a win Friday. Further proving just how strong the College players are, Finn was an alternate for the primetime (on ABC) Jeopardy! National College Championship. There were a few people wondering why Finn’s school—UCLA—was mentioned on Friday, when this hadn’t been mentioned in the past for some others. Basically, if the show thinks it’s worthwhile to mention, they will. There’s really nothing more than that.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

In October 2021, Tony Bennett (and Lady Gaga) released their second collaboration, this one titled Love for Sale (their first was 2014’s Cheek to Cheek.) This will very likely be Bennett’s final album, as he chose to retire shortly before the album’s release, with his family worried about the potential that Bennett might fall and injure himself on stage (as he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2016). His final shows were performed in August, with Lady Gaga, at Radio City Music Hall.

I’m sure the opening break was very welcome for all three players, who scattered 5 Triple Stumpers and 4 incorrect responses over the first 15 clues. Finn, though, did pick up $1000 on an early Daily Double. Coming out of the break, things were a little better, and Margaret held a $2,000 lead after Single Jeopardy; Finn and Karen were tied. (Finn selects first in Double Jeopardy, as his lectern is closest to the host.)

Karen had a very strong performance to open the round, picking up the bottom four clues in GROUPS IN HISTORY (punctuated by the first Daily Double.) In fact, we went from clue 23 of the Jeopardy! round to clue 20 of Double Jeopardy! without an incorrect response or a Triple Stumper. Late in the round, after everyone consciously avoided 3 LETTERS IN A ROW ALPHABETICALLY, Karen got the last Daily Double—but decided on a conservative bet. Going into Final, the scores were Karen at $15,400, with Finn at $11,400 and Margaret at $9,800.
In Final, only Margaret was able to come up with the correct response—and that means she becomes the new Jeopardy! champion! She’ll defend her title tomorrow.

- Thus far in Season 38, contestants are 65% on Daily Doubles at the $1200 level. Karen’s chances of winning, overall, would be higher had she bet aggressively for a runaway on the final Daily Double, as opposed to trying to win the game in Final.
- A new feature at the very end of the episode: The show highlighted tomorrow’s two challengers! I liked seeing that!

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:
Finn: You’re in Stratton’s Dilemma today; you can’t both cover Margaret and win a Double Stumper with Karen. I’d lean towards $8,201—but if you hate the category, then less than $3,400 works too.
Margaret: I’d bet between $1,601 and $1,800 (this will stay above Karen’s score if she’s incorrect, while also forcing Finn to make a bet if you’re correct.)
