Noah Webster founded Amherst College with Emily Dickinson’s grandfather Samuel Fowler Dickinson; after Dickinson’s family purchased a copy of the 1844 edition of Webster’s dictionary, the American Dictionary of the English Language. Dickinson referred to that dictionary as her “Lexicon”, relying on that dictionary significantly in her work. That 1844 edition was also the final edition that Webster worked on in its entirety. Dickinson scholars, thus, need to be familiar with that 1844 edition in order to best understand her work.
