Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: After defeating 16-day champ Ryan Long, 5-day champion Eric Ahasic has picked up four consecutive runaways, mostly on the strength of his stellar play on Daily Doubles. In fact, with his stats just through 5 games, he is the second-best player of Daily Doubles in the entire field for the 30th Tournament of Champions (coming up in November), averaging $7,320 per game on these important betting clues. (Only Matt Amodio, who averaged $7,800 a game, is stronger). And, if you don’t think Daily Doubles are important, the contrast in how Sam Kavanaugh and Jennifer Quail played their respective Daily Doubles in the 29th Tournament of Champions final last May should be illustrative enough to demonstrate their importance.
To keep all of my readers aware of things going on in my personal life: It is now day #5 of me at my new place in Newfoundland and Labrador–the move has gone well, all of my stuff has arrived and I am still in the process of unpacking. One thing that I’ve definitely noticed is that I feel like I have more time in the mornings to get work done—for those who don’t know, Newfoundland Time is one and a half hours ahead of Eastern Time. (While this does come at the expense of feel like I have less time in the evenings, I’m okay with that thus far.)

Correct response: Who is Lucille Ball?

Lucille Ball was one of American television’s first stars, starring in the 1950s megahit television series I Love Lucy. She said of famed slapstick film star Buster Keaton, “He taught me most of what I know about timing, how to fall and how to handle props and animals.”
Lucille Ball also had a hand in the history of Jeopardy!; it was Ball who suggested to Merv Griffin in the early 1980s that Griffin hire Alex Trebek to be the answer-and-question presenter of the revival of Jeopardy!. I’d say that it was a pretty good pick!
Here’s an AP article from almost exactly 1 year ago that talks about the Ball-Griffin-Trebek story, and is an incredibly interesting read knowing what we know now about the Great Host Search of 2021 (and counting).

Both Eric and Mazin got off to a strong start, in spite of Mazin not quite getting the correct Agatha Christie Title on the game’s first Daily Double. Lisa was also hurt early by a couple of incorrect responses. The second half of the round saw Eric jump to to a bit of a lead, as Mazin gave a pair of incorrect responses, while Eric picked up seven correct himself! Lisa finished Single Jeopardy! in the red and got to select first in Double Jeopardy!

Eric’s incredibly strong Daily Double play continued, with him picking up $11,000 over the two Daily Doubles. Meanwhile, the contestants wanted zero part of the “Top-Secret Code” category. Mazin nearly broke the runaway, but a late $2,000 incorrect response—rebounded by Eric to boot—sealed his fate. Eric had $29,400 going into Final, to Mazin’s $9,200 and Lisa’s $200.
Lisa was the only correct respondent in Final, but that didn’t matter for Eric—he’s now a super-champion at 6 wins and $160,601! He’ll go for win #7 tomorrow!
