The Jeopardy! community is mourning the loss of Brayden Smith, who passed away on February 5. The Brayden Smith Memorial Fund has been established, dedicated to furthering the educational aspirations of Southern Nevada students.

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Today is the first episode hosted by Mike Richards, the Executive Producer of both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. There are a couple of things that fans should really note with this: firstly, the show did make it clear in November that not every guest host was in contention for the job of replacing Alex Trebek (in fact, there is a chance that the permanent host will not get a guest hosting spot); secondly, the only reason why Richards is hosting this week and next is that California enacted stricter COVID-19 guidelines prior to this week of taping, and Richards was the only person on set with hosting experience. Any other potential guest host was unable to meet the increased COVID restrictions in time to be able to tape. Also, it should be noted that Mike Richards is not Michael Richards, the problematic actor who played Kramer on Seinfeld. Now, onto the actual game: Sam had a very strong performance on Friday, winning over $33,000 and not giving an incorrect response. If he keeps that up, he’ll have a very good chance of picking up win #2. Another thing to watch out for today: which contestant will pick up Mike Richards’ cadence the best.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

“Taps” is a very well-known bugle call played daily at 2100 hours, during military funerals, and at flag ceremonies by the U.S. Armed Forces. It was arranged during the U.S. Civil War by Union Army Brigadier General Daniel Butterfield and was an arrangement of a previous bugle call now known as “Scott Tattoo”. Originally written to sound the end of the day, the playing of “Taps” at funerals became de rigeur because the previous tradition, three volleys of rifle fire, was too mistaken for enemy fire.
In Commonwealth countries (including Canada), a bugle call known as “Last Post” is played during military funerals.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- After Alex and Ken, it’s going to take me some time to get used to Mike’s cadence. That said, I am happy to see we got through all of the clues today.
- On the final Daily Double, it was a good idea for David to make a large bet. The problem lay in the fact that David’s bet was not large enough. At a minimum, it needed to be at least $12,000, in order to put himself in a lock position; betting only $10,000 risked way too much for any potential upside. That said: I don’t want this to be a criticism of aggressive wagering; I very much like that. It’s just that there’s a middle-ground of “not aggressive enough”, which this bet fell into.
- One thing I’ve also noticed in the discussion about the show over the past few weeks: It makes me feel uneasy when I see my opinions parroted as others’ opinions on places like Reddit. Form your own opinions, please!
