Welcome back to another week of Champions Wildcard on Jeopardy. We’re almost through the strike replacement programming, and we’re just 11 episodes away now from the intended “postseason play” that we were supposed to see starting back in September. Today’s game features Julia Markham Cameron, Finn Corrigan, and Kristen Thomas-McGill. My notes from their initial games reminded me that Julia was a very expressive champion in her initial games and could become a new fan favorite.

Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind, her only novel, which spawned one of the highest-grossing films of all time three years later, “was both beloved and condemned”. As the Atlanta History Center says, “Despite its popularity, the depictions of enslavement, the Civil War, the American South, and historic Atlanta are not accurate. Both the book and the movie depict a rosy myth of the Old South, casting the institution of slavery in a benevolent light.”

This should be a straightforward Final Jeopardy for any contestant or home viewer familiar with publication dates and settings of important American novels.

Andy’s Thoughts:

• As you can tell by my extra words in this section and the wagering section, today was a very interesting game.
• Julia was just as much the same expressive self as she was the last time she was on. I really enjoy that sort of gameplay.
• I know that’s technically up to the player to realize that they are able to bet up to $2,000 on a Daily Double in Double Jeopardy, but it really does help the flow of the game when the host reminds them at the time, and I’m disappointed that Ken didn’t do this today. Being that I have cited this specific thing as a reason why Ken was a better host than Mayim, I do think that Ken’s habits are regressing here.
• A reminder that per the leading article rules the show goes by, where leading articles such as “the” and “a” are generally ignored, “a gust”, while it can be homophone with “august”, would fall under the “leading article rule”. (This pertains to WORDS IN U.S. CAPITALS $800). That said, I also would have agreed with the judges had they ruled the opposite way, thinking that “a gust” causes enough confusion with “august” to render the response incorrect—it’s one of those judgement calls that some fans are going to agree with and some fans aren’t. Not everything is cut-and-dried.

Julia: Standard cover bet over Finn is $8,201. Considering that Finn is in Stratton’s Dilemma and thus has occasion to bet everything, you really should do this. (Actual bet: $7,000)

Finn: You’re in Stratton’s dilemma; you can’t both cover Kristen and stay ahead of Julia if the two of you both miss Final Jeopardy. I think your two options here are “between $2,401 and $5,998” (tending towards the smaller end) if you’re not covering Kristen, or all in. ($2,401 at least covers Kristen’s small range.) (Actual bet: $1,800)

Kristen: You have two options here: if you think Finn is going to bet small, go all in. If you think Finn is going to bet big, bet between $3,601 and $4,199 (to defend against a lot of Finn’s smaller range.) (Actual bet: $8,600)
