Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan (sailing for Spain) is best known today for his early 16th century voyage in which his boats and crew circumnavigated the globe; Italian explorer Antonio Pigafetta is credited with actually sighting the penguin species in South America. Interestingly, Pigafetta was one of the few crew members who remained loyal to Magellan in the face of the mutiny that his crew faced on the trip.
Magellanic penguins are larger than African penguins or Humboldt penguins, species which they are often confused with. The species is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species; some studies have reported that the population of Magellanic penguins in the Falkland Islands has decreased by nearly 50 percent.
