In 1925, John Scopes had recently been hired as the head football coach and subsitute teacher at Rhea County High School in Dayton, Tennessee, when the American Civil Liberties Union announced that it would file a test case to challenge the constitutionality of Tennessee’s Butler Act, which prohibited the teaching of evolution, provided they could find a Tennessee teacher willing to act as defendant. Scopes became that teacher. The prosecution team included William Jennings Bryan, who had given the aforementioned commencement address in 1919.
