De Arte Venandi cum Avibus translates to “On The Art of Hunting with Birds” and was written when Frederick II was Holy Roman Emperor. The most famous copy of the manuscript can be found in the Vatican Library, and was inspired by the works of Aristotle and of Arab falconer Moamyn. In it, Frederick II writes of his experiments with hatching bird eggs, and if birds hunted using their sense of smell.
