The son of Henry III, King Edward I (also known as Edward Longshanks) was King of England from 1272 to 1307. During his reign, he invaded and conquered Wales, defeating Llywelyn ap Gruffyd. On the administrative side, he was known for codifying English law in the Statutes of Westminster and establishing Parliament as a permanent institution.
However, he was also criticized for his conduct towards Scotland (attempting to take over after originally being asked to arbitrate a succession dispute) and regarding the Edict of Expulsion in 1290, which saw the Jews removed from England.
