Any Final Jeopardy! to do with the 50 states is often much more difficult to the contestants on stage than it seems on the surface at home. It is immensely difficult, under that stage pressure, to be able to go through the 50 states in 30 seconds. And if you start at the wrong part of the country, you’re going to run into difficulty.
The US state of New Jersey is named after the island of Jersey, which is located in the English Channel. The reason why the clue said “It doesn’t have Island in its name”? Rhode Island, as it is said, gets its name from the Greek island of Rhodes — also European.
