More information about Final Jeopardy:
Ascension Island was first sighted in 1501 (on Ascension Day, 40 days after Easter) by the Portuguese navigator Afonso de Albuquerque. Because it was so small (34 square miles), the island was seen to have little use except for fresh meat, so it was not claimed by the Portuguese. Even fresh water was not easy to obtain on the island.
Settlement on the island was organized in 1815, as a precaution due to Napoleon having been exiled to (relatively) nearby Saint Helena.
It is currently administered as a British Overseas Territory with Saint Helena and Tristan de Cunha, all remote islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.
