The Boeing 747, one of the most iconic aircraft in history, has been in production since it was introduced (with Pan Am as its launch customer) in 1970. It was introduced to have a significantly greater capacity than a Boeing 707, and actually required Boeing to construct a new plant, as Boeing did not have a plant large enough to assemble the giant planes.
