In Shakespeare’s King Lear, Edgar was the Earl of Gloucester’s first-born son; Edgar Allan Poe is one of 19th century American literature’s best-known authors. While he is best known for living in the Baltimore area, he was born in Boston to actors Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and David Poe, Jr.; David abandoned the family a year after Edgar’s birth and Elizabeth died of tuberculosis; Edgar was raised by Virginia merchant John Allan.
