Looking to stop him are Anne Singleton and Mark Fitzpatrick. Ryan’s buzzer skills are still very strong, but his attempt numbers have dropped slightly over the course of the week.

In 1704, Alexander Selkirk was serving on the British pirate ship Cinque Ports when, in the Juan Fernández Archipelago just over 400 miles off the coast of Chile, Selkirk thought the ship to no longer be seaworthy, and, staging a mutiny, demanded to be let off the ship on Más a Tierra Island. Later realizing the gravity of his error when he was the only member of the mutiny, he demanded to be let back on board, but the ship’s captain refused. Selkirk spent over four years on the island before a British ship passed by to rescue him. (Previously, two Spanish ships had anchored at the island, but Selkirk, being British, decided that being captured would be a worse fate than the island, choosing to hide in those cases.) In 2005, a fragment from a set of nautical calipers was found on the island where Selkirk had lived; they were believed to be Selkirk’s as nobody else would have possessed such an item on that island.

Selkirk’s story was one of many stories of that era that reputedly inspired Daniel Defoe to write his famed 1719 adventure novel Robinson Crusoe; other inspirations may have been Spaniard Pedro Serrano, Englishman Henry Pitman, as well as the 12^th-century Ibn Tufail work Hayy ibn Yaqdhan.
