Correct response: What is the Leaning Tower of Pisa?

A project which took over two hundred years to complete, the Leaning Tower of Pisa was built on soft ground with construction beginning in 1173. Unfortunately, five years and three into the completion of the planned 196-foot (60m) structure, the soil beneath its foundation had begun to shift, and the tower’s now-famous lean had begun to be noticed. (While I can’t ask them for confirmation when writing this write-up, as I don’t want to spoil today’s Final Jeopardy! in order to actually ask them, I’m 99% sure that my parents here at The Jeopardy! Fan got to visit the tower on one of their vacations over the past few years.) An effort to “correct” the lean was attempted by trying to build the remaining five floors shorter on the uphill side, but the sinking continued. Interestingly, there were many delays in construction due to wars and debt; those delays actually allowed the soil to settle and were the reason why the tower did not topple over. After recent restoration attempts, the tower now carries a four-degree lean.

- I was very disappointed with Phillip’s bet on the last Daily Double. A bet of $1700 risks nothing more than a bet of $1000 does, with a clinched victory as the upside. He was fortunate that this was probably the easiest Final Jeopardy! of the week, and not one of the more difficult ones that have been seen as of late.
