In 1501, after Pedro Álvares Cabral had discovered present-day Brazil after going off-course during a voyage around Africa to India, Amerigo Vespucci was sent by the Portuguese specifically to investigate this landmass—specifically to determine if the line was east of the demarcation point of the Treaty of Tordesillas with Spain. His voyages to the Americas became widely known throughout Europe after his letter to Lorenzo de’ Medici, from which the quote in today’s Final Jeopardy clue was taken. Eventually, the two New World continents—North America and South America—were named after Vespucci.
