King James (James I in England, James VI in Scotland) was a major patron of Shakespeare, and the playwright very much was looking to please the King. The play is generally dated today to 1606, just after the Gunpowder Plot against the King; references to that are sprinkled in the play. Moreover, the line where the Weird Sisters tell Banquo “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none” is a direct attempt to legitimize King James’ claim to the throne, as James claimed to be a descendant of Banquo.
