Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 1990s No. 1 Songs) for Friday, May 3, 2024 (Season 40, Game 170):

This title character of the top song from 1996 can’t stand her boyfriend Vitorino & spurns him to be with his 2 friends

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Henry Lindstrom, a customer experience lead originally from Altadena, California

Henry Lindstrom on Jeopardy!

Deana Krumhansl, an attorney originally from Honolulu, Hawaii

Deana Krumhansl on Jeopardy!

Weckiai Rannila, an engineer from Albuquerque, New Mexico (2-day total: $28,000)

Weckiai Rannila on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Weckiai Rannila is hoping to go into the weekend as a 3-day champion, as Deana Krumhansl & Henry Lindstrom try to stop her from doing that.

Correct response: What is “Macarena”?

More information about Final Jeopardy:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Yes, Macarena is not just the title of the song. She is the title character of the megahit dance craze from the summer of 1996. In the original Spanish lyrics of the song, Macarena spurns Vitorino as he is being inducted into the Army, essentially making the song one of many that could be filed under “these lyrics are terrible, but they’re set to a catchy beat.”

I think the show is hoping that the category + “top song from 1996” is enough to get most of the playing audience there; I also think that most who don’t get this correct will probably be left thinking that this was one they should have had.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Non-Cat & Dog Pets; Presidential Homes; Big Sir; A Number From 1 To 10; World Series Mvps; Calling “HR”)

Both Weckiai and Deana struggled with incorrect responses early and were both in the red. However, they both got out of it before the break. Henry led after 15 with $3,200, while Weckiai had $200 and Deana $0.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Today’s interviews:

Henry took a trip to Australia and got to eat kangaroo.
Deana bonded in college with an Arizona resident over daylight savings time.
Weckiai got to touch a Nobel Prize.

Weckiai and Deana played well in the second half of the round to come closer to Henry; Henry still led after 30, though.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Starts With An Animal; On Cinema At The Cinema; World Geography; Poets & Poetry; When I Die; Delete My History)

Double Jeopardy saw another 8 combined incorrect responses; Henry bet just $3,000 on his Daily Double, and some incorrect responses, combined with none from Deana, meant that Deana took the lead on the final clue of the round!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Deana 16 correct 2 incorrect
Henry 12 correct 4 incorrect
Weckiai 16 correct 7 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 10 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Deana $9,400
Henry $8,800
Weckiai $3,600

Weckiai was the only player correct in Final Jeopardy; Henry bet too much, and that makes Weckiai a 3-day champion!

Tonight’s results:

Weckiai $3,600 + $3,600 = $7,200 (Who is Macarena?) (3-day total: $35,200)
Henry $8,800 – $7,800 = $1,000 (Who is Carmen)
Deana $9,400 – $8,201 = $1,199 (Who is Roxanne?)

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Deana $9,400 Henry $8,800 Weckiai $3,600)

Weckiai: I’d limit my bet to $2,400 here to stay ahead of Deana if she’s incorrect. (Actual bet: $3,600)

Deana: Standard cover bet over Henry is $8,201. : (Actual bet: $8,201)

Henry: Bet between $1,201 (thereby covering any of Deana’s low range) and $1,599 (thereby keeping Weckiai locked out.) (Actual bet: $7,800)
