National College Championship. If she can continue her buzzer dominance—Ciara’s got in 80% of the time in yesterday’s game when she attempted to buzz—she will have an excellent time again today. If not, either of today’s challengers may well take the spoils today.

Atlanta, Georgia was originally named Thrasherville (in 1839) and then renamed to Marthasville (in 1842). Three years later, J. Edgar Thomson (chief engineer of the Georgia Railroad) suggested another renaming—Atlantica-Pacifica—which turned into Atlanta, also the feminine form of “Atlantic”. The city became capital of Georgia in 1868, as the previous capital, Milledgeville, reportedly refused to permit Black delegates lodging in the city’s inns for the state’s post-Civil War Constitutional convention.

All three of our players started strong today, but it was the two challengers who tied for the lead after 15 clues at $3,800 apiece. It also seemed to me that Ciara wasn’t quite as dominant on the signalling device at the start of the game.

Coming out of the break, our players avoided the beer category a bit, but Nicole picked up $3,000 on the game’s first Daily Double late in the round; she held a strong lead after Single Jeopardy.

Ciara and Jackie split the Daily Doubles in this round; Ciara picked up $3,000, whereas Jackie dropped $4,000 late enough in the round such that she couldn’t get out of third place before the end-of-round signal brought end to the proceedings with three clues to play. (I wouldn’t really call it the fault of the players or even the host, but the Academy Museum category was a longer Clue Crew category because the Oscars are on Sunday.) Scores going into Final were Ciara at $15,200, Nicole at $12,000, and Jackie at $10,600.

As with many state capitals Final Jeopardy! clues, this one was a Triple Stumper. Jackie held back enough to become champion, and she’ll get to meet Mayim Bialik on Monday!
