Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Jeff Weinstock took a close game yesterday and broke it wide open with a late-game True Daily Double. I am very much in favor of such gameplay—historically, players on average get Daily Doubles correct 65 to 70% of the time, but Final Jeopardy! correct only 45 to 50% of the time. Thus, it is usually a much better play overall to get your money in on the Daily Doubles—the clues are easier on average. Today, Joe Feldmann and Lauren Drinkwater—two Marylanders—take to the Alex Trebek Stage.

Over the course of his long and industrious career, Jack Nicholson has won three acting Oscars: for Best Actor for One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Nicholson won for playing Randle McMurphy; Louise Fletcher also won for playing Nurse Ratched in that film), for Best Supporting Actor for Terms of Endearment (Nicholson won for playing Garrett Breedlove; Shirley MacLaine won for her portrayal of Aurora Greenway), and for Best Actor for As Good as It Gets (Nicholson won for his portrayal of Melvin Udall; Helen Hunt won for her portrayal of Carol Connelly).

Joe got off to the best start in today’s game, picking up eight correct responses before the break! Coming out of the break, both Lauren and Jeff mounted a bit of a comeback, with Jeff converting a True Daily Double shortly before the end of the round. Jeff still sat third after a well-played Single Jeopardy! round.

In a slightly slower-paced Double Jeopardy! round, Jeff found the first Daily Double. Fortunately for him, he didn’t try to double up—he was incorrect. A small turning point happened late, when Lauren added an extra syllable to a 5-syllable word, as Joe picked up the rebound!
