Yesterday, James Hirsh picked up his third victory and has guaranteed at least a spot in Champions Wildcard. However, he would still be very squarely on the Tournament of Champions bubble without another victory today. In order to get that victory, he’ll need to beat Diana Miller of Virginia and Tim Leung of Wisconsin.

This is also a reminder that we’re still two weeks away from the start of Celebrity Jeopardy! All-Stars; much like the last three years, those will be airing in primetime (Fridays at 8:00 PM on ABC)—different from when you’d normally watch the show.

In a 2018 New York Times opinion piece following Sears’s filing for bankruptcy protection, Louis Hyman wrote about how the famous Sears catalog “undid the power of the storekeeper, the landlord, and by extension, the racially marked consumerism of Jim Crow.” In local stores in the American South at the time, shopkeepers were permitted to discriminate against Black customers; Sears, who did not discriminate who they sold to, found profit in what was nonetheless seen as radical for the time.

Interestingly, a point that Hyman made at the end of his article still rings true, in my opinion: “In some ways, the freedom of the Sears catalog is echoed in how online shopping allows transgender people to buy clothes without being harassed and African-Americans to browse without being followed down the aisles.”

This is one of those Final Jeopardy clues where I honestly don’t believe it matters one iota whether it goes 0/3, 3/3, or anywhere in between: it’s gettable for sure, but it also is designed to make you think about the world around you.

Much like Kevin Kodama did on Wednesday, James had the opportunity to put this one away on the last Daily Double. However, James went for the smaller Daily Double bet, leaving himself vulnerable to be caught in the Final Jeopardy Round by both Diana and Tim.

And caught James was in Final Jeopardy, after Diana was the only player to give a correct response on the game’s final clue. That makes her champion over the weekend; she’ll be back to defend on Monday.
