Correct response: What is the Palme d’Or?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
The Palme d’Or is the highest award at the Festival International du Film de Cannes in Cannes, France; the award is in tribute to the fact that a palm frond is on the city’s coat of arms. The Palme d’Or has been awarded between 1955 and 1963 and from 1975 onward (in other years that the festival has taken place, the prize has been known as “Grand Prix du Festival International du Film”). The only 3 films to have won Cannes’ top prize and the Oscar for Best Picture have been The Lost Weekend (1946, as a Grand Prix), Marty (1955, as the Palme d’Or), and Parasite (2019).
And, because the pedants always tend to roll in: Merriam-Webster says “the use of carat (in place of karat) to indicate the fineness of gold is also considered acceptable.”
Since Alex Trebek’s diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, many community members have been raising money. The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store is as well! Andy’s Thoughts:
- In terms of “top 5-day totals of all time, adjusted for doubled dollar values”, MacKenzie is 54th.
As was demonstrated by Alex multiple times in the Jeopardy! round, Alex will warn a contestant who is failing to phrase responses in the form of a question in the Jeopardy! Round, as in that round, a failure to phrase is a warning offense, not a penalty.
- You can also follow that same link for the rules when it comes to Final Jeopardy! spelling; obviously, “Palm” and “Palme” are pronounced identically. Therefore, the judges were absolutely correct to accept MacKenzie’s spelling.
- This was only the second time in MacKenzie’s five games where she was leading after the Jeopardy! round.
- The writers were trying to be clever when it came to setting the Jeopardy! Round board with many of Alex’s familiar phrases (“OOO, SORRY”, “YOU’RE OUT OF THE HOLE”, “MAKE A SELECTION”, “& FINALLY…” and “THE WRITERS ARE TRYING TO BE CLEVER”.
- A note to future contestants: Both Jon and Kimberly had occasion to ring in with whatever their best guess might have been on the final clue of Double Jeopardy! (IN THE ARTS WORLD $2000), as Kimberly was just $800 off the lead and Jon was at -$200. Neither player had much at all to lose, but a great deal to gain, in terms of improving one’s position going into Final Jeopardy!, and a guess would have been a good idea.
