A French analog to King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table, the Twelve Peers, also known as paladins, were Charlemagne’s 12 foremost knights. They appear most often in French stories known as “chanson de geste” (“song of heroic deeds”), and while the composition of the group varies, Roland and Oliver always generally appear. The most famous “chanson de geste” today is The Song of Roland, which tells of the heroic death of Roland at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.
