Correct response: Who is Joseph Pulitzer?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
Joseph Pulitzer, the publisher of the New York World newspaper, wrote those words in 1904 regarding his wish to open a journalism school. At the time, the journalism trade was seen as a common trade, and Pulitzer wished to elevate that, seeing that journalists should be incredibly important in the pursuit and service of democracy. Pulitzer’s entire quote was “An able, disinterested, public-spirited press, with trained intelligence to know the right and courage to do it, can preserve that public virtue without which popular government is a sham and a mockery. A cynical, mercenary, demagogic press will produce in time a people as base as itself. The power to mould the future of the Republic will be in the hands of the journalists of future generations.” Those words would definitely be prophetic in the 21st century.
The Columbia University School of Journalism, founded by Pulitzer, opened in 1912 shortly after Pulitzer’s death.
