One thing to look forward to—and one way of telling just how quickly ubiquitous the game has become—a category in today’s Double Jeopardy! round is “5-Letter Wordles”. I’m pretty certain that Wordle references would not have been on anyone’s Season 38 bingo cards at the start of the season.

Correct response: Who is Spike Lee?

Renowned filmmaker Spike Lee won a Student Academy Award for 1983’s “Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads.”, which was his master’s degree thesis at Tisch School of the Arts. His films include 1989’s Do the Right Thing, often considered to be one of the biggest Best Picture nomination snubs of all time. Lee finally won a competitive Oscar, for Best Adapted Screenplay, for the 2018 film BlacKkKlansman—the film itself received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. One last point: Because I always say this, by saying “in 2019”, the clue is sufficiently pinned, as the award was presented to Lee in calendar year 2019 (in spite of the film being a 2018 film). Also, I enjoy the use of the term “competitive Oscar”, as this came four years after Lee was awarded an Honorary Academy Award.

The opening 15 clues saw a good battle between Mattea and Katie, with Mattea holding a small lead (helped by both Allan and Katie taking a $1,000 neg at the bottom of IN THE ZOOM ROOM). The second half of the round saw Allan play very strong, going from -$1,000 to the lead at $4,800 (including $2,000 on a Daily Double.)

It was Allan who found the first Daily Double, but he only bet $2,000 at the $800 level—a bigger bet might have been better for him. Meanwhile, Mattea, in spite of her strong play, seemed spooked by the SCIENTIFIC CANADIAN category; it might have been worth going there just to keep the Daily Double out of Katie’s hands! Katie doubled her $7,000 with only three clues left in order to prevent a runaway! Scores going into Final saw Mattea just in “crush game” territory at $21,800, Katie at $14,000, and Allan at $10,000.
Mattea and Allan got Final correct today to finish first and second; Mattea comes back on Monday to go for win #10!
