The reference is to Aaron’s breastplate from Exodus 28. The 12 stones set on it: sardius (ruby), topaz, carbuncle (garnet), emerald, sapphire, diamond, ligure, agate, amethyst, beryl, onyx, and jasper. They represented the 12 tribes of Israel.
Today, the American Gem Society recognizes birthstones for each month and alternate birthstones for others. The American Gem Trade Association recognizes 20; the American Gem Society recognizes 21 (adding sardonyx to the AGTA list).
