The Peru–Chile Trench (also known as the Atacama Trench), in plate tectonics, defines the boundary between the Nazca Plate, which subducts under the South American Plate.
That subduction has led to many earthquakes along the trench, including the 2010 Chilean earthquake (8.8 on the Richter scale) that also led to a tsunami.
