Toys “R” Us evolved from Children’s Supermart in the Washington, DC area, as a baby-furniture retailer in the late 1940s. He began receiving requests to carry toys for babies, and then older children, and the toy sales ended up dwarfing the furniture sales. The first Toys “R” Us store, dedicated exclusively to toys, opened in Rockville, Maryland in 1957.
While the US stores are no longer in existence, Toys “R” Us does still operate in Canada and was sold to Fairfax Financial in April.
