In 1937, brothers Richard “Dick” and Maurice “Mac” McDonald opened a food stand near Monrovia Airport that sold mostly hot dogs. In 1940, they moved into a drive-in restaurant located in San Bernardino, California, naming the restaurant McDonald’s Barbecue, selling barbecue and hamburgers. By 1948, they realized that there had to be a way of streamlining their operations; the parking lot was always stuffed full of cars and the brothers wanted faster turnover. They closed the restaurant for renovations for three months. When it reopened, the menu had been slashed from 25 to 9 items and each order was standardized: a hamburger came with mustard, ketchup, onions, and two pickles. Jobs in the restaurant were specialized, taking a cue from Henry Ford’s assembly line. Though it took a few months for the concept to catch on and become profitable, by 1951 their “Speedee Service System” had caught on with working and middle-class families in the area.
Many restaurateurs were inspired by what they saw at the McDonald’s operation (including, most notably, Glen Bell of Taco Bell). Eventually, they half-heartedly got into the franchising business. Then, Multimixer salesperson Ray Kroc (who kept on selling these milkshake makers to the restaurant, dumbfounded as to why the restaurant needed so many) paid a visit. Krok immediately realized the potential, convinced the McDonald brothers to let him handle 100% of the franchising, and the rest is history. McDonald’s restaurants now span the globe.
Since Alex Trebek’s diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, many community members have been raising money. The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store is as well!
