A race similar to the Vulcans, the Romulans in the Star Trek universe refused to accept the teachings of Surak and left Vulcan, settling on the twin planets Romulus and Remus. The Romulans are generally portrayed as enemies to both the United Federation of Planets and the Klingons (though there are notable times in the Star Trek canon where there is an alliance).
The Romulans are generally seen in Star Trek as a 24th-century allegory to the Roman Empire.
