Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Theatre) for Semifinal #2 in the 2017 Tournament of Champions (encore presentation) on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 (Season 34, Episode 47):
Despite objections from the playwright’s estate, a 1991 French production of this 1952 play had a small all-female cast instead of male

(correct response beneath the contestants)
Cindy Stowell, had she not passed away from stage 4 colon cancer in December 2016, would have qualified for this tournament. The players in the tournament are wearing dark blue ribbons as a way of promoting colon cancer awareness, in memory of Cindy.
Today’s contestants:

Correct response: What is Waiting for Godot?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” is a play in which Vladimir and Estragon wait for the arrival of someone named Godot (who never arrives). The original cast is entirely male.
In the years before his death, Beckett strangely objected to many interpretive adaptations of the work. He was famously quoted as saying “women don’t have prostates”, an objection rooted in the fact that Vladimir frequently leaves the stage to urinate.
In 1991, the Brut de Beton theatre company wished to perform the play with an all-female cast at the Avignon Festival. Jerome Lindon, the person designated under French law to protect Beckett’s works after Beckett’s 1989 death, objected, stating that the play would be deformed by the all-female cast. (Pshaw.) A French judge allowed the performance, with a proviso that a letter of objection by Beckett’s estate be read before each show.
On an unrelated note: Being on Jeopardy! is not easy. It can be an incredibly stressful experience, especially when you’re not doing as well as you’ve expected and things are going south for you. Everyone handles that stress differently (frankly, we can consider ourselves fortunate that Bob Harris turned to comedy), but absolutely nobody should be judged for how they react to these situations.
And if you think you could cut it as a contestant, you can always sign up to give it a shot yourself!
