Arlington National Cemetery was built during the Civil War because the country’s previous military cemetaery, the United States Soldiers’ Cemetery in Washington, was nearing its capacity. The site at Arlington House was selected, additionally because it had been the home of Confederate general Robert E. Lee, and there were political considerations behind denying Lee the use of his home after the war.
Today, Arlington is the final resting place of nearly 400,000 veterans and active duty service members. All U.S. Presidents are eligible for burial at Arlington due to their role as commander-in-chief.
