Correct response: What are NATO and the Warsaw Pact?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was founded as an alliance of Western countries in 1949, and the Soviets (along with several Eastern Bloc states) formed the Warsaw Pact in May 1955. While it was formally known as the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, it got the name Warsaw Pact due to being signed in Warsaw, Poland. Czechoslovakia was fearful that West Germany was re-arming and wished a security pact with East Germany and Poland, and the admission of West Germany into NATO spurred the Eastern bloc into action. NATO still exists (in fact, incorporating many former Warsaw Pact members), while the Warsaw Pact collapsed around the same time as the fall of the Soviet Union.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Effective in first on buzzer stats: Conor 27.78% (15/54), Sara 37.04% (20/54), Melissa 35.19% (19/54).
- Friendly reminder that game material and contestants for each game are selected randomly and independently of each other. It was a fortunate coincidence for Conor that a World History teacher got a Final Jeopardy about the Cold War. And, if last year’s tournament was any reminder, contestants are never guaranteed to get a clue correct in a subject that they may teach.
