While the original capital was New York City, it was determined that Washington D.C. would become the federal capital of the United States of America in 1790 upon the city’s completion. The capital city was temporarily moved to Philadelphia at that point, and the executive mansion moved to President’s House in Philadelphia, located at 524-30 Market Street. While the original building was demolished in the 19th century, a President’s House memorial still stands at the corner of 6th and Market, at Independence Mall in Philadelphia.
