Lescot’s knowledge of architecture from illustrations in books and from Roman ruins in France, some sources claim that he did visit Italy, but others dispute this. He began his rebuilding of the Louvre in 1546 and was influenced by classical elements. Lescot designed part of the “Old Louvre” part of the complex, which served as a French royal residence before Versailles.
It currently serves as the home of the world’s most famous art museums.
