Jamie Ding, a bureaucrat & law student from Lawrenceville, New Jersey (31-day total: $882,605)

Jamie Ding on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After winning five games each, taping on four consecutive days, Jamie Ding got a bit of a break in “Jeopardy! Production Time” between Games #31 and #32. Looking to add to his total of $882,605, he will likely crack the $1,000,000 mark if he makes it to the end of April. He’s also only 24 correct responses away from 1,000 in that department; a win today would just about guarantee that Jamie gets to that mark in regular play. Jamie is also a win away from tying James Holzhauer for 4th all-time in number of games won in regular play.

However, one of our challengers is a name that I recognize—Philadelphia chess player Greg Shahade. Greg is certainly capable of a game like Patrick Nolan had on Thursday, if he doesn’t end up playing giant killer himself. The International Master, whose sister Jen has been lucky enough to present clues on the show before about chess, has basically written about his experiences becoming a strong trivia player. If you remember back to Game 6 of the 2024 Tournament of Champions final, where he got a shoutout, Greg is also one of Ben Chan’s protégés; I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if Greg put up a great performance in this game today.

Final Jeopardy! Clue: Of South Africa’s 12 official languages, these 2 are alphabetically first & last

In order to redesign our merchandise area to serve you better in 2026, all merchandise sales have been temporarily taken offline. Look for a return in late 2026! All previous orders will still be supported.

Correct response: What are Afrikaans & Zulu?

More Information About Final Jeopardy!:

The 12 official languages of South Africa are Afrikaans, English, Sepedi, South African Sign Language, Southern Ndebele, Southern Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa, and Zulu. South African Sign Language was the most recent of the 12 to be recognized, with the National Assembly doing so in May 2023. Of these languages, Zulu is the most common first language, followed by Xhosa and Afrikaans, while English is the dominant language in government and the media.

This feels like a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy for anyone who remembers Zulu as a language; Afrikaans is certainly well associated with the country.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Entertaining Demises; Women Of Science; A Perfect 10; Squealers; Where There’s A “Ville”; Fashion Magazines)

Thanks to finding the Daily Double and getting it correct, it wasn’t Jamie who led after 15 clues, it was Greg. At the interviews, the scores were Greg $4,600 Jamie $3,000 Katrina $800.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Greg 6 correct 1 incorrect
Jamie 4 correct 0 incorrect
Katrina 2 correct 2 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Greg has gone viral online for losing to young chess prodigies.
Katrina was born during 1990’s “Super Jeopardy”, causing her mom to miss it.
Jamie went to Oktoberfest at the age of 8.

Jamie’s buzzer struggles continued in this one as both challengers were getting in ahead of him a number of times. Greg led after 30, while on this first board, Katrina was 3/5 in Perfect 10 and Greg was 4/5 in squealers.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Greg 10 correct 3 incorrect
Jamie 7 correct 0 incorrect
Katrina 6 correct 2 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Jamie $4,400

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Historic Alliances; The Shape Of Things; New Meaning; Flowers On The Wall; Plays & Playwrights; Craft-y Celebrities)

Greg found both Daily Doubles back-to-back on clues #2 and #3 of Double Jeopardy, picking up a combined $14,600 from them and jumping into a huge lead. However, there were still 27 clues for Jamie to mount a charge—and Jamie came incredibly close to keeping Greg from having a runaway, only failing to do so after giving an incorrect response on rebound on the very last clue of the round. On the second board, Jamie went 3/5 in shapes, while Greg went 4/5 in plays and 3/5 in historic alliances.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Greg 23 correct 5 incorrect
Jamie 18 correct 3 incorrect
Katrina 9 correct 3 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 11 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Greg $32,600
Jamie $16,000
Katrina $3,000

All three of our players were correct today in Final Jeopardy, and we have a new champion in Greg Shahade! Greg will be back tomorrow to defend—how long will Greg’s run as champion last for?

Tonight’s results:

Katrina $3,000 + $1,990 = $4,990 (What are Afrikaans & Zulu?)
Jamie $16,000 + $3,010 = $19,010 (What are Afrikaans & Zulu? (TTFN!))
Greg $32,600 + $400 = $33,000 (What is Afrikaans + Zulu) (1-day total: $33,000)

Avg. streak: 4.231 games.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Why do I think this result happened? Jamie hadn’t yet found his buzzer timing, Greg is also a very strong player, and Greg had variance work out in his favor, finding all three Daily Doubles. That’s just how this game works sometimes—and why I still firmly believe that Ken’s record of 74 consecutive wins is untouchable in this day and age. Enough potential players do enough preparation that one of them is going to get variance to work in their favor before anyone gets close to 74 victories.
  • Due to today’s game being a runaway for both first and second place, no wagering suggestions need to be posted.
  • Today’s J!6 clues can be found at the monthly archive.
