Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

As Season 42 reaches the 50% mark, the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament begins the semifinal round today with a matchup between Roger Craig, Jen Giles, and Drew Basile. My predictions do have Roger as the favorite entering this one, but we all know that the variance in modern Jeopardy! means that anything can happen once Johnny Gilbert says his famous opening narration.

I do also wonder how much more conservative the players are going to be in the semifinals now that they’ve probably experienced how difficult the quarterfinals were.

For those fans who watch on an NBC-affiliated local station and are still wondering where the show might have moved to because of Olympic coverage on NBC, check your local listings (or Matt Carberry’s Google sheet.)

St. Crispin, martyred along with his twin Crispinian in 286, is best known today because of his feast day on October 25; many battles throughout history, including Leyte Gulf, Balaclava, and Agincourt, took place on that day. In Henry V, Act IV, Scene 3, Henry V makes a famous speech referencing St. Crispin’s Day to rally his English troops on the eve of battle. The speech was successful in rousing his English troops to victory the next day in the battle.

Honestly, I am a fan of this Final Jeopardy clue at this level, it’s a more difficult Shakespeare/religion clue that is still eminently gettable by players in this tournament.

Meanwhile, Jen had an early lead thanks to the Daily Double, but Drew overtook her by the time we saw the first batch of commercials. After 15 clues, the scores were Drew $2,200 Jen $2,000 Roger $800.

The scores were very interesting, though, entering Final. (On the Double Jeopardy board, Roger went 4/5 in movie magic and 3/5 in science, while Drew went 3/5 in writers.
