Today’s three entrants into the Thunderdome: Eric Park, Christine Kim, and Brad Nehring!

J! round categories:
GOVERNMENT & POLITICS
THAT WOMAN CAN SING!
BAD WORDS
FROM WORLD BOOK: “U”
LET’S EXERCISE
GIVING YOU THE TIME OF DAY

As a sports fan, I was annoyed Alex didn’t ask for a “which one?” on WORLD BOOK $400 (He “won the Indianapolis 500 race four times”, his brother Bobby won it 3 times) — after all, the intended answer’s son won it twice!

Christine had the best luck on the buzzer over the first part of the first round! Scores at the first break:

Christine $2,000
Eric $1,000
Brad $0

The interviews today made me chuckle slightly: Christine’s birthday is April 20; her son posts online that on April 20th that the birthdays of “an insane cruel dictator, and Hitler” are celebrated. Kids, these days…

Back to the game, GOVERNMENT & POLITICS $800 had the Daily Double! Christine got to play it, with scores at:

Christine $5,600
Brad $3,000
Eric $1,200

Christine bet $5,000! Her clue: GOP Congressman Steve Scalise from Louisiana as this post in the House working to persuade others to vote with the party. Her correct response put her at $10,600!

Scores after the J! round:

Christine $10,600
Brad $3,000
Eric $1,200

DJ! round categories:
CNN: WORLD LANGUAGES
PHYSICAL SCIENCE
HOSPITALS
O…………..K, THEN
ALISON WONDERLAND
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

WORLD LANGUAGES was a video category! And it did not have the Daily Double — woohoo!

Brad was rolling Through The Looking Glass when he got to the first Daily Double in that category at $1600! Scores:

Christine $13,000
Brad $11,800
Eric $6,800

Brad bet $1,500. His clue: In a preface, Lewis Carroll gives the pronunciation of some new words found in this poem. I would have bet more if I were him — and his correct response put him at $13,300!

PHYSICAL SCIENCE $1200 had the last Daily Double; this one was Brad’s as well, just after Alex gave the minute-to-go warning! Scores:

Christine $14,600
Brad $14,100
Eric $7,200

Brad bet $400. I was so stunned by this that I went back to check that I had the scores right! His clue: The exosphere, the edge of the atmosphere, is primarily made of particles of hydrogen & this element. Brad said nitrogen and fell to $13,700!

In spite of Brad picking two $2,000 clues, they were both Triple Stumpers before the end-of-round signal, leading to scores going into Final of:

Christine $14,600
Brad $13,700
Eric $7,200

FJ! category: U.S. CITIES

FJ! clue: In 1846 it had 200 people; 14 years later, thanks to a discovery, it had over 50,000, making it No. 15 in the country

Eric 7200 – 5400 = 1800
Brad 13700 + 13700 = 27400
Christine 14600 + 12801 = 27401

So Christine’ll be back tomorrow to defend!
