Samuel D. Conte, who died in 2002 at the age of 85, was the head of the Purdue department, after coming from TRW systems.

Purdue’s computer science program began with five faculty members and 24 students who were pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees. An undergraduate program began in 1968.
