Final Jeopardy! category: 19TH CENTURY NOVELS

Final Jeopardy! clue: The Gold Bug, Edgar Allan Poe’s story about the search for Captain Kidd’s buried loot, helped inspire this 1883 novel

What is “Treasure Island”?

Megan 7200 + 7000 = 14200 Buzzy 12200 + 8000 = 20200 Erin 16400 + 8001 = 24401

This week’s Poll of the Week contains cute dogs. Go vote!

From the introduction to an edition of “Treasure Island”:

In “My First Book”, RLS was more forthcoming about the specific, rather than the inspirational, sources of his book. The precise source materials, he wrote, were “a few reminiscences of Poe, Defoe, and Washington Irving, and a copy of Johnson’s “Buccaneers”. Once again, he reveals his appreciation for American romance writers – here, Poe and Irving – with whom RLS had a strong affinity. From Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Gold Bug”, a story based on the legendary buried treasure of Captain Kidd, RLS claims to have found Flint’s skeleton pointer. In Poe’s story, the treasure of gold coins and jewels is located, in part, by dropping a string weighted with a beetle through the eye socket of a skull.

I’m disappointed that Buzzy lost today.
