Remember, Ken Jennings is going to be on ABC’s “500 Questions” tomorrow! In honor of that, I recounted Ken’s top performances during his original run.

Scores going into Final Jeopardy:
Buzzy $12,800
Ted $7,200
Sarah $5,600

Final Jeopardy! category: ADVERTISING ICONS

Final Jeopardy! clue: This spokes-animal created in 1951 got a wife & a daughter, Antoinette, in the 1970s

Who is Tony the Tiger? (Sarah had no response, Ted went for Geoffrey the Giraffe)

Sarah 5600 – 5600 = 0 Ted 7200 – 6000 = 1200 Buzzy 12800 + 1601 = 14401 (8-day total: $147,803)

Not entirely sure what Ted was thinking there with his bet here in Final. It really would have been in his best interests to go all-in there, considering the possiblility that Buzzy might leave off the extra $1, what with the “second + third = first” situation going on. At least Sarah knew what was going on!

Tony the Tiger is the spokes-animal, of course, for Frosted Flakes, which is a cereal brand manufactured by Kellogg’s. (too soon?)

Meanwhile, from Ad Age:

Tony’s appearance has changed quite a bit over the years since since he was first created by Leo Burnett in 1951 to sell the then-new cereal. He’s grown more muscles and now stands at six-feet-two. But in the past few decades, his sports-themed message has remained pretty consistent, such as a 1980s-era ad showing Tony interacting with kids at a volleyball game and explaining how the flakes can “bring out the tiger in you.” And the message has worked: Tony ranked No. 9 on Ad Age’s 1999 list of the Top 10 Advertising Icons of the Century, just behind Aunt Jemima and the Michelin Man.Even Tony’s voice remained constant, forever supplied by Thurl Ravenscroft until he died a few years ago.…Meantime, at age 60, Tony endures, outliving his mother, Mama Tony; his wife, Mrs. Tony; his daughter, Antoinette; and son, Tony Jr. — who were all introduced over the years but later dropped.

(Fun fact: Thurl Ravenscroft is the same person who sings “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch” in “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”.)
