Today’s (May 12, 2016) Final Jeopardy (in the category AFRICAN GEOGRAPHY) was:

After the secession of South Sudan from Sudan in 2011, this became the largest country in Africa by area

Remember, today’s scores will be added to tomorrow’s to determine the Teachers Tournament champion! In case you missed my Finals preview, check it out here!

Today’s contestants:

Kaberi Chakrabarty, an elementary bilingual teacher from Joliet, IL

Jill Gilbert, a middle school English teacher from Des Moines, IA

wk34_0502_0506_gilbert_lineup

Jason Sterlacci, a 6th grade English teacher from Somerset, NJ

wk34_0502_0506_sterlacci_lineup

Scores going into Final Jeopardy:
Jason $19,800
Jill $11,300
Kaberi $9,600

Final Jeopardy! category: AFRICAN GEOGRAPHY

Final Jeopardy! clue: After the secession of South Sudan from Sudan in 2011, this became the largest country in Africa by area

What is Algeria? (Kaberi went for the DRC, Jill went for Nigeria)

Kaberi 9600 – 5000 = 4600 Jill 11300 – 1300 = 10000 Jason 19800 + 2801 = 22601

Once again, this is a two-day total-point affair; these scores will be added to tomorrow’s to reach the tournament champion!

If you caught last night’s #JeopardyLivePanel, you heard Jason mention that he spent a great deal of time doing Sporcle geography quizzes. Looks like it worked out for him!

Here are the top 15 African countries by area, in square miles:

  1. Algeria 919,595
  2. Democratic Republic of the Congo 905,355
  3. Sudan 718,723
  4. Libya 679,362
  5. Chad 495,755
  6. Niger 489,191
  7. Angola 481,354
  8. Mali 478,841
  9. South Africa 471,445
  10. Ethiopia 426,373
  11. Mauritania 397,955
  12. Egypt 386,662
  13. Tanzania 364,945
  14. Nigeria 356,669
  15. Namibia 318,696

I saw one or two comments earlier on the Internet expressing disappointment that Jeopardy would ask this question when #1 and #2 on this list are so close. To that, I say “why would Jeopardy ask the question this way, in Final Jeopardy, if the answer were the Democratic Republic of the Congo”? Remember, Final Jeopardy has the constraint of “needs to be written down within 30 seconds”.
