The Estates-General was ostensibly an advisory body to the King of France, but its duties had been effectively replaced by a Parliament (which had been a rubber-stamp body for the King in the 17th and 18th centuries). When Parliament attempted to assert its independence, it found itself dissolved and the King attempted to replace it by the then-archaic institution known as the Estates-General in early 1789, representing the three “estates” of French society (the clergy, noblemen, and commoners). The Third Estate’s assertions of dominance in defiance of the King’s wishes held up proceedings and the French Revolution followed shortly thereafter.
