Here’s tonight’s Final Jeopardy answer and question for Wednesday, January 4, 2017:
Final Jeopardy! category: CLASSIC MOVIE ROLES
Final Jeopardy! clue/answer: A letter to the director that said, “Dear Sir, I am fat & wear spectacles” got a young actor a role in this 1963 film
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Megan Soto, a student services supervisor from San Diego, California
Rich Betz, a teacher from Honesdale, Pennsylvania
Amanda Berofsky, a quality assurance analyst from Waterford, Michigan (1-day total: $5,999)

After hearing the correct response, it is plainly obvious that the quote and character refers to Piggy (played by Hugh Edwards in the film).
The 1963 version of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, directed by Peter Brook, certainly received critical acclaim. The boys cast were not professional, had generally not read the novel, and scripting was minimal. Brook filmed by explaining what he wanted the actors to do, who then generally improvised. It apparently worked surprisingly well, at least in the critic’s eyes. It has a 100% critic approval score on Rotten Tomatoes (though the audience rates it at just 63%.)
My thoughts: There are clearly no physical flaws in the clue itself that would necessitate my personally judging this clue as flawed. Whether you as a viewer thinks the category typing was misleading is certainly your prerogative, as I myself did not consider “Lord of the Flies” in my list of classics, but that is also not the standard upon which flaws are judged from an official standpoint (in other words, I’d say the fault here lands upon me the viewer and not the show).
I also think “1960s British Film Roles” might have been a better category name than “Classic Film Roles” and might certainly have removed all debate without compromising things at all.
I’m sure I’ll get lots of people leaving comments on this one today, for sure!
