About 60 miles north-northwest of Washington, DC, Camp David is the United States’ Presidential retreat. (Note that it is not titled “Mar-a-Lago”.) It was originally built as a WPA project as a camp for federal government agents, but FDR converted it into a presidentil retreat in 1942, naming it Shangri-La (after the fictional Himalayan paradise in James Hilton’s Lost Horizon.) It got the name Camp David when Dwight Eisenhower named it in honor of both his father and grandson, both named David.
September 1978 saw the famous Camp David accords brokered there by Jimmy Carter, between Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin.
